View Full Version : LED accents?

Got a couple of questions for those who have done LED accents in their boats. The last thing I want to do is end up with a boat that looks like it came from the set of a "Fast and the Furious" movie. I just want a dim red glow for those late nights on the water. I've seen some do the cupholder mods where they drill a hole in SS cupholders and insert a single LED and wire them all together on a switch (there is even a guy on ebay selling them already made up with the bulbs installed). Or would I be better off doing one tucked up in each side storage compartment and under the dash so that they all shine downward?

I also plan on installing an underwater LED under the platform. Does anyone have a preference in manufacturer?

Here's what I have. They're crappy camera phone pictures so the red looks more orange but you get the idea.

What do you think of the transom light? You happy with it?
I have yet to hear any feedback from anyone on the group buy I did last fall.

Looks good from the pic.

I just installed mine, but I haven't had a chance to test it out at night. I can't see it during the day, lol. The quality is top notch, and the brightness out of the water is incredible, I'm sure it will look awesome at night in the lake!

I love it. I'm always in pretty murky water, about of foot visibility if your lucky and it's still plenty bright. I wanna take it to clear lake one of these days and see how it looks. I get a lot of compliments and questions.

I had a lot of second thoughts on the white I did on mine until I saw it in clear water. The white looks pretty sweet in clear water.

They will do green as a custom. Small upcharge and extended lead time for delivery though. I decided on going with 2 of the Blue flood beams. I actually bought a 3rd light in the spot beam but my Fresh Air Exhaust is in the way so I didn't install it.

Just one in the transom, one strip above each cupholder and the courtesy lights are replaced with some accent lights from superbrightleds.com.

Took the plunge today. Ordered 11 of the superflux LED's for the cup holders, a 4" strip LED for under the dash, and 2 of the high intensity floods for the transom. All in white (per the wife's request). I think that should light things up nicely in the evenings.

The plan is to tie these into the courtesy light switch that is in place already. Anyone see any issues with doing that? Should I look at putting the transom lights on their own switch?

I too didn't want things TOO bright. Just changed the accent lights to red, and added a cluster to each cup holder area from superbrightleds.com I have a different boat, but my accent lights were just pop out the halogen bulp and put in a T-10 led 5 cluster off ebay. Quick plug and play.
I might pull the trigger today on underwater LEDs from Lumitec. White goes the farthest but we boat in green/brwn water so I'm getting Blue. Wish they had Red but they don't penetrate the water as well as white/blue, plus the 'blood water' effect =:)

White and blue are best looking but also best bug attracters as well

i spent my 4th of July installing some new LEDs in the boat.
used some LED strips that we use on our RC airplanes, and some left over aluminum bar i had from making the custom bimini top.
Total cost was under $30 and took about 2 hours

didnt want the speaker ring look, i wanted more of a undercar neon glow. end result was just what i was after.

i wasnt expecting this. it really lights up the tower (reflection) its MUUUUCH brighter in person, hopefully it wont reflect off the windsheild at night, but our windsheild is SO laid back i dont think it will even be an issue.

Millerda, do you have any pics of your transom lights working? I was torn between ordering the floods and the spotlights, ended up going with the spotlights. Including a picture from the boat cruising about 25 mph. I'm real interested in the difference between the two, I was kind of thinking it might be cool to do 2 of each.

I don't have them yet. They have been on back order for almost a month now. As soon as I get them installed I will get some pics and get them posted up. I am anxious to see how well they work.

Nuh uh, those are the VisionX lights. The same as Newty put on the back of his boat but X2.

Talked to Oznium tonight. My transom lights are still on back order. I was told last week they would ship Friday. Now I am being told then shipment should come in Thursday this week. When I placed the order on 6/18 I was told the back order would be a week. At this point just getting a little frustrated at the waiting.

Just an update. I received everything finally this week. Planning on using the 3M 5200 adhesive/sealant for the drill through and screws on the transom mount lights, so probably won't be installing them until Sunday night (since it looks like summer will arrive here in Oregon this weekend).

kojack
07-23-2011, 09:23 PM
They suggest to use the 4200. the other 5200 is too strong and if ever one light burn down or something you wont be able to remove them and change them. When I received the instruction for my transom light. It was written in huge Red bold letters. " DO NOT USE 3M 5200". Hope its not too late for you.

millerda68
07-24-2011, 12:30 PM
Thanks! It's not too late. I won't be putting them in until next weekend. Have a business trip coming up and the boat will be sitting for a few days, so all will have a chance to cure out.

I had read on some of the other posts (Newty) that 5200 was used. There was one post with a debate back and forth. I do have a tube of 5200, but will to pick up some 4200.

viking
07-25-2011, 04:46 PM
Either will work but I used 4200 for the simple fact that "IF" i have to remove it I should be able to. Newty did use 5200 but suggested and would use 4200 next time for the reasons stated already.

good luck with the install.

I have a set of Abyss light. I love them. very bright. The only thing I hated was drilling a hole in the boat to run the wire. Make sure you counter sink the screw holes. You do not want the gelcoat the chip. I ran the wire up to one of my accessory switches. works awesome.

Yes, finally got them hooked up this past weekend, but have been on the road for work, so have not had a chance to test the transom lights yet. Will be on the road until next week, so hoping over the weekend once I get home I can get them in the water at night and see how they look.
