well with the cold weather and Colts booted from the playoffs I'm kinda bored so I'm going to take the time to get ahead on some homebrewing. That's my Irish Red Ale you see on top of the kegerator that I just picked up off of craigslist; Ingredients for an IPA are on the way. Trying to decide whether it's too early or not to start my summer honey ale. With the honey it usually takes a little longer to ferment but then again if it's ready by spring it will be gone before summer.

Any other homebrewers out there?

I see your going through an artistic impressionist period as well.... ;)

That is a great activity. Something has to get you thru the cold winter nights. My friends have been making mead. We have about 50 gallons that need to be bottled some time soon. The more you brew the more work it is on the bottling end of it and the more you are like it can wait a few more days. Then a few months go by.

My brother is getting to be an artist with his brewing. He gave me a case of his latest porter for christmas. mmmmmmmm.

did it once years ago. good beer, but a lot of work for what you get out of it in return, and here, you can't take glass to the lake, so no enjoying it while you boat :(

the bottling part definitely sucks which is why I'm switching to the keg system- that hopefully will take a lot of the work out of the only part of the process I don't really enjoy; I can't imaging bottling 50 gallons!

I once trashed my wifes brand new kitchen...

haha now that is funny. Also it is not trashed the wifes kitchen it is showing her that you need more space for the home brew.

thanks for the great advice flat H20- sounds like you know your brew; I have my corny kegs and fittings on order and the kegerator came with the co2 tank and regulator- I can't wait for everything to get here.

I was a chemist in my former life and now I'm in the medical field where I've refined my sterile technique- so I'm hoping what I have going now will be a little better than the stuff I used to brew in college. Right now I'm just using malt extracts with some specialty grains, but at some point I'd love to step up into all grain brewing.

nice mustang; my dad used to have a 67 mustang that my grandma bought new. I took it to the high school prom. It had less than 100k original miles on the 289 but he had to let it go to make room in the garage for his fishing boat! My brother in law has it now and he's going to rebuild it.

135lbs to be exact and the brother-n-laws was 168lbs. I have never fought something that pulls that hard for that long of time. On my last day out fishing we hooked into a 200+ lber and after almost 2 hours of reeling the sucker in, the rod snapped in half severing the line and it was gone.

Fun times!

I like this idea. The one problem with living in Oregon is there is a lot of Brew festivals during the summer it takes time away from being on the water. To drink great beer to spend time at a place i love. Now that is the hardest question in life.

I don't do either very well. It's been at least 8 years since I hit the slopes and I started wakeboarding as an old guy with bad knees. But I ENJOY them both immensely! :)

now that's a good idea- do you think I could modify the center ballast compartment to dispense beer? I don't think it would be too difficult to put a beer tap in the center walk through.

I have to figure out how to edit and add music.
Enjoy the snow, BTW cold today -18 and an ice rainbow reflection from the sun, the sun was 20 degree to the right of the pic

haven't u seen the pics of the guy with the 'bu that has the keg in his boat? pony kegs go in the driver rear corner and the tap is located where the transom remote is. there was a pyramid of empty kegs in a motel room from last spring break.

Ok Joe, I am officially jealous. Looks like you had a great time. What ind of camera rig did u use? I lived in Hayden (20 miles west of Steamboat) for two years in the late 90's so the 'Boat used to be my home mountain. Have lots of great memories there. Spent a lot of time on Four Points lift and skiing the bump run directly below the lift line. They didn't have a snowcat operation back then, I don't think.

Funny you ask......

Not less over 4:40 ago I had just made a declaration to my best friend that were in deed going to develop a nice spring brew and possiblly a nice summer brew.

Here is where lies the problem.......We do not know where to start.....:(

Any placed you could send us? We are currently looking at

Any pointers? :)

What could we expect to spend for say 50 gallons of an IPA? Any general rules apply?

Haha! I bet you could round up some testers! I'm going to have to test this batch a few times before I go out and slap my name on it. Wouldn't want the Wolfe's getting the "bitter beer face". :-x

Your out of town this week right D?

Let's try again for next week if your in town. Just shoot me a message or give me a ring and we will plan on Johnnys.

There's no wrong way to make beer (if it's clean). From watching my brother I can tell you will get better and better and better at making it. Every beer he makes not is fantastic-- after about 3 yrs of effort.

There are lots of books out there but most consider Charlies Papazians "New Complete Joy of Homebrewing" to be the bible of homebrewing

you can find lots of "how to" videos on you tube.

Best thing to do might be to pop into a local brew shop and check out your equipment and ingredient options- it's like a lot of things you can make it pretty simple or as complicated as you want. I've only brewed in 5 and 10 gallon batches- if you plan brewing up 50 gal at a time you would need some pretty serious equipment. Like kane said sanitation is key but there's a lot of good no rinse sanitizers that make that easy. Also keeping good records makes it easier to recreate beers that you like later.

Right now I've got my honey IPA fermenting- I'll let you know if it's any good.

Al, I rented the Go Pro Helmet cam with a chest and a helmet mount, probably look for one for all sports since its water proof to 100 ft. We stayed at the steamboat grand right next to the gondola at the sheraton. They have been doing the cat operations for 29 years loosley operating out of the Tugboat bar and grill now they have there own building. We never made it to ski the resort, which we planned on thursday morning before our 4:00 denver flight just too tired from 16 hour of champagne.....

I love bumps and we ski them hear out east...

I have added move vids to my youtube accout at JMVOTTO.

i have a few more to do and then i will try to edit and add tunes .
