Shaft packing question?

I recently attempted this shaft packing, and read all the archived threads about it. My question is that I only got 2 threads of rope out, and took a mirror and flashlight and saw no more rope.

Is 2 pieces of rope unusual to get out of the nut? It was leaking pretty steady.

usually there are 3-4 pieces.

Mine was 3 from the factory, 1999 Mobius. I think it took about 12 inches of rope to do three new pieces.
