trailer winch

Has anybody upgraded their stock winch to a higher capacity and perhaps the 2 speed kind. I don't power load and sometimes i have to really crank it hard especially if i misjudge how far i back in the trailer. Any ideas (besides backing it in some more ;) )is appreciated.

Myr first day out I tried to hand crank the boat 1.5 inches - out of the water - never moved the boat but shattered the drive gear in the winch. I put in a heavier rated Fulton - but never try cranking on dry land...
