06 Outback V

Im looking at buying a 06 Outback V with 220 hours. I was wondering how this old of boat compares with the newer models. Also, it only has the gravity 1 ballast system, but from what ive read this isnt too hard to upgrade. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

the 06 Outback V is the 05 LSV renamed (in 06 the LSV was redone). THe Outback V stayed the same (meaning same hull) from 06 to 08 then was completely redone in 09. I have the 06 Outback V and I just turned 200 hours.

Likes:
Smaller so it fits in my garage nicely.
Cheaper than the LSV's (06 and newer).
Many of the amenities of the larger LSV.

Dislikes (as compared to the LSV's):
Smaller
The OBV has less freeboard
Tower design - the OBV tower folds forward rather than back like the LSV
Tower diameter - feels more wobbly and cheap compared to the LSV

I really wish I would have went with the LSV, but the difference in price is enough to keep me happy most days. I like the size of my boat, but I wish the freeboard was higher. I'm not sure how the freeboard on the 09 OBV compares to the 06. The 09 is slightly shorter, but visually looks like it has higher freeboard. I don't know for sure.

The reason i want to go with the OBV instead of the LSV is because i plan on pulling people who slalom ski as well as my family, who mostly board, and would like to try surfing. From what ive heard, the OBV is a very solid boat for both.

trebor, we have the 07 obv with 120 hours on it, really only used in 80 hrs first year, 10 last year(crappy weather and newborn) and about 30 this year.

the ski wake is very nice, and it does more than adequate for my boarding skills and surfing. Lots of gi to gii upgrades in these boats that are posted on the forum. i hopefully will be doing mine soon, jester is also working on his.

The OBV is good for all three sports, we only surf (primary) and wakeboard, so that's why I'm partial to the LSV.

we have an 08 obv and use it for all 3; ski, wakeboard, surf- and we love it. Like any crossover boat it's not superior for any of the 3 but it's solid in all 3 catagories. In 09 they made the OBV a little shorter (20' vs 20'8") and deeper and also the newer ones are a few hundered pounds heavier. Where are you located? If you're ever around Indiana I'd be happy to show you mine.

They are asking $27,900. It has 222 hours, and an upgraded stereo system w/ 2 tower speakers, but other than that its pretty much stock.

For $1,500 more, my '06 has Perfect Pass Stargazer and GIII ballast, docking lights, SS rubrail, spare tire, upgraded stereo head unit, and a couple other things I can't remember off the top of my head. Let me know if you might be interested. 210 hours

Trebor, you hadn't indicated what purposes you wish to use your new acquisition for.
I have an '07 OBV.
My input from an all-sport perspective:
Skiing: -
- At 3000 lbs it is (next to the Sanger) the lightest V-dirve on the market
- Wakeplate helps drive the nose into the water and flatten the wake
- BUT: It is not a Direct Drive and will never perform like one for skiing.
- NB: So if you are a skier, make sure that boat has the wake plate, or add it ($$).
Wakeboarding:
- As several have posted elsewhere, with proper technique, you should be able to perform just fine behind this boat.
BUT: Your riders who go behind other, larger craft, may complain about this wake.
BUT (2): For advanced boarders, at full rope and higer speeds (23+) it won't perform like a bigger boat.
Surf:
There is countless info on this forum as to setup, but you do need more ballast, or some heavy friends, if you wish to surf ropeless.

Ballast:
The only bad advice on acquisition I got was I didn't need G3. Baloney! So I fill 2x350's manually.
- Check with your dealer whether they have the capability to install G3. My dealer does not.
- The do-it-yourselfers on this forum have done it themselves and shared the knowledge.

Overall:
Get it right (type of boat). Moomba/Supra dealers fully expect that their customers will be back, often for an upgrade or different configuration.

dang moombabound couldn't have said it any better; there are some guys at the ski club who have skied behind a lot of different boats and they classify the wake at longer lengths (i.e. 15 off) as "actually not too bad" and "I could adapt to that" and "kind of like an older nautique or nautank as we call them" there's one guy that skied both my boat and a 2010 OBV and says there's a significant difference between the two- with the older lighter models being better.

Of course as Ed said the wakeboard/wakesurf wake of the newer models is better. Experienced wakeboard riders have done tricks behind my boat that I'll never approach- and one guy who usually rides a Supra launch 22 said and I quote "hey that's not too bad for such a small boat"

I've been able to freesurf behind my boat with the 400# bags and a few big dudes in the boat- and I'm a novice surfer. I do plan to plop in some heavier bags at some point.

So I've decided my OBV is a worthy crossover boat for my current needs
