Sorry wasted space on the forum. I was just excited to finally be able to start landing w2w jumps.

I understand being excited about it. It is always nice to get better. What speed /weight/rope length are you running?

If you pop with your knees when you get to the wake, you will go 10 feet past the wake. :)

Yeah toe side will be my next adventure. Then I want to start trying to jump switch. Been trying to hit the wake harder and harder when riding switch.

I run 20 mph, no ballast (just driver and 1 passenger), using this rope

http://www.stearnsflotation.com/Core-15-TCH-Handle-wMainline-P1824C37.aspx

But not sure the length. I took the two 5' sections out which shortened it 10' but not sure how long the main line is.

I know I have to stand up more when I hit the wake to get pop but I just can't get it into my head to do it. I know I have to but just can't get my body to do it.

My wife got me "The Book" set and that has helped out tremendously. Best thing ever. Then put it on my IPOD so I can watch it over and over.

by no means am i a pro, just a weekend warrior. you're in a croutched position when you hit the wake, which means you will not get any pop. you don't have to hit the wake that hard/fast. try cutting half way out then with a controlled progressive edge, keep you legs straight & the rope close to your hip. progressive meaning your constantly going faster as you hit the wake. i think you'll be suprised of the pop you will get off the wake.

check out wakeboard magazines website how to section; "do less with more".

walb0244, Just learn to do a surface switch and you can hit the wake from both sides no problem.

flex, Thanks for the link. I will have to try that now.

I can go w2w but am always doing it wrong. I just can't grasp the "popping". I read the link that Flex posted and it says to stand straight. I just can't see doing that. If I am standing straight and edging, how does it pop????

I think it would be better described as "standing up straight". Riding knees bent into the wake and standing up off the top of the wake.

sharpie is right, if your knees are bent stand up as soon as you hit the wake. it takes a little bit of timing but will help you out. i try to keep my chest open & pointing to the sky standing tall. picture the board riding up the wake and not cutting through it.

Thanks very much for this post and link! This advice helped tremendously. I think that everyone who has been advising any kind of "leaping" attempt for a beginner is doing a disservice. We just don't have the strength or timing to get away with that. I have wasted years doing it the wrong way. I've made it across many times, but it's usually been more of a fluke than anything. The one time that I've made it to the flats, I had to wonder what I did right when I seemed to forget to leap.

At wakeboardingmag, I searched their videos and eventually found this:

http://wakeboardingmag.com/videos/2010/07/07/video-jeff-houses-last-session-before-surgery/

Finally, a video which repeatedly shows what is happening in slow motion. The only time that he's doing any crouching is when he's aiming for a LESSER pop in a simpler move.

I have been working my way back to fitness after weeks of physio for several joint issues on my right leg. Plus, I was recovering from an illness last week and had reduced strength. Last Sunday, I dared to ride for a few minutes. Standing tall all the way through the approach (no crouch), I was nearly able to make a wake-to-wake jump at 20 MPH, which is 2PMH less than what I needed before... plus I only felt some fatigue in my shoulders afterward, with no leg issues. It was much easier on the body overall.

I'm thinking that I'll be confidently doing wake-to-wake jumping next time.

does not appear to be wasted space at all! look how many people are in the same sutuation you are, just learning w2w, lots of us have been helped by you.

glad to see the progression you have made, keep it coming, there may be many critics here, but they are all riding behind the same boat and probably have a similar bag of tricks, just dont have the guts to post a vid of them peeling their eyelids back when they catch an unknown edge.

btw, the water in your vid looks awesome. i would love to find water like that.

Problem solved: http://www.bartswatersports.com/catalog.asp?P=4427 . No more "eye-openers"! These goggles will make a braver rider out of anyone.

The water was on a Thursday. It is like glass during the week. After being on that for 6 days now I'm spoilt. Still working on the pop. Normally I don't look down so hard to know how high up I am. So have to watch video to see.

Definitely want to incorporate switch and toeside jumps because most weekend warriors are "heelside heroes" and never even think about the other side if the wake

Maybe some of you guys are like me, grew up on a slalom ski. First time on a wakeboard years ago I could almost go across the wake without even lifting off the water. Guy driving the boat said I did the best job of skiing on a wakeboard he'd ever seen...

I've had some hard spills attempting to go wake-to-wake but finally started to get the feel for it. Now for some reason this summer I'm back to crash and burn. I did just upgrade my ballast system but figured that would help me. I may have to shorten up my rope to narrow the wake a little until I get it down again.

Or maybe I'm just gettin old!
(plus it hurts a lot less when you "crash" surfing)

One thing I've tried to get used to toe side is to pop off while going from the center out of the wake. It's a little more gradual and helps you get the feel for it.

You're not getting too old. I just learned W2W 180 and I'm 39. Slalom skiing you're taught to absorbed the wake while edging. To get that nice floaty air you need to progressively edge to the wake and standup as you hit the wake. Don't do like most people and edge hard at your turn in and then flatten out at the wake. Those people go W2W about a foot off the water. I'm still learning myself and my W2W is anywhere from 4-6ft. I'm sure I could progress faster but I'm also incorporating various surface tricks, ollie 180, and toeside jumps.

Yeah I've gotten the W2W jumps. My father in law made the comment tonight he has never seen me crash as much as I did tonight. I told him it was because I'm not just doing W2W jumps I'm trying new stuff.

Learned surface 180s. Been loving those so much. Spining backwards on a board doing a surface 180 with a handle pass I love so much. (They hurt really bad tho when you catch the back edge of board)

Been praticing olies. Those are hit and miss for me right now. Sometimes I ollie and get like 2 feet and sometimes I get like 4 inches. So not sure about that just yet.

Been trying to Ollie and do 180 in the air. Landed one tonight then crashed about 10 feet later. Hahaha. Went out on toe side, did olie, 180 and landed it.

Still working on the toeside jumps. First trick I think I gonna try is a W2W 180 as soon as I get my toeside jumps down.

My goal this summer was to really get my Heelside W2W down. I spent a year in Iraq looking forward to being able to do that.

Once you start learning to jump and do surface spins it is like a bunch of doors started opening and now I'm crashing more and more. Hahahaha.

Oh yeah. Still haven't gotten to where I'm filling the ballast. Not sure at what point to start filling ballast.

And also been riding switch. I try and ride about half switch. Which works out good since it gives me chance to do more surface spins. :D

what speed and length are you riding at?

does it feel as if you have little time in the air?

walb0244
08-16-2010, 10:22 PM
Not exactly sure the length I'm riding at. I will have to measure the rope. Pretty sure we are running 20 mph. And yeah it seems like I'm only in the air for a second.
