View Full Version : Ballast bag water loss solution :)

I've noticed that after surfing about 10 minutes my 1100 lb surf bag prob would lose about 200 lbs. I quickly determined that due to the list of the boat it was emptying thru the vent line. So some quick Maguivering I came up with a simple solution......... wine cork.....full synthetic, not cork

Doc, I like it! I noticed the same thing but thought water was leaking thru my check valve but you are right - the drain thru hull is lower than the top of the bag so the water is draining out until the level in the bag is even with the drain hole. Now, we just need to remember to remove it before we hit the drain switch!

mine did that also-I zip tied the drain hose up to a screw in the boat that holds it about 6" higher than the drain port

daze, you're missing the most important part of docs post - you need to DRINK to get the right fix. I'm not much of a wine guy out on the boat, so we need to figure out how to make this work with a can! :)

I take the plastic 6 pack thingy and shove it in the hole-- of course this requires drinking the whole six pack first.

I suppose you could roll up the cardboard from a 12er like a stogie and shove it in there. :p Alcoholics are always the most resourceful.

Great idea DOCDRS! Now if you can buy some black corks you'd be pimpin.

Sorry, but it's a fox paws to take pimpin' advice from Newty anymore. I think he's using painted frisbees for hubcaps on his truck wheels now too.

In case you get sick of losing corks a more permanent fix is to run the vent from the port bag to the fitting on the starboard side of the boat and vice-versa. That will solve the problem, but will also force you to get used to the bags venting on the opposite side of the boat.

The zip tie trick works on smaller bags, but we've found on the 1,100, unless there is a lot of freeboard in the boat, it's impossible to get the hose higher than the top of the bag.

Jasonwm - I have a similar issue but I don't have my bags vented, so it's just coming out the drain line as the boat lists. Would a possible fix be to route the drain lines to the opposite side. I'm guessing that if I did run vent lines to the opposite side, the water would still come out the main drain line?

Sorry, I should be more careful when I use the term vent, but what I described will apply to any connection to the bag. On the fill side of things it's not a problem because the sprinkler valves prevent the flow of water out of the bag, otherwise they would continually drain.

So yes, rerouting the drain hose to the other side will prevent the bags from draining through that connection. In most applications you can get the hose high enough in the boat (even if you have to run it under the gunnel in front of the bag a bit) to not need to go all the way over to the other side of the boat, but it just depends.

I did like moombadaze and zip tied the drain line up high, behind the front trim panel of the rear locker so that it is higher than the bag and the bag no longer drains out the drain line (unless I turn the drain pump on of course).

Yep, that's a good way to help limit draining, unless you're running a big bag like a 719, in which case the top of the bag will still be at the same level as the hose.

Thanks for the input Jason.......with the list on the boat and the top of the bag just under the hatch opposite side venting will also solve the problem....and then if I want i could also T in a line from the pump on that side and back fill the bag 2x as quick using the opposite side pump as well ... :) ......

Yeah, we've had a few customers that have linked their pumps together with valves so they can fill one bag at 2x the rate. Just ensure you have sufficient vent capacity to ensure you don't damage the bag or the boat.

I assume I will have the same issue of water loss out of the vent line in a 2010 with the jabsco pumps? I just received my 1100 from you (thanks Jason) but haven't swapped it out with the 750 yet. What's the easiest solution? Other than the cork, which I'm digging :D

Unfortunately yes, in fact because of the improvements to the factory system in the '09 and newer boats this may be even more of an issue. We can get you some factory matching hose to extend the vent connection if you want, and there are a couple of ways to route that.

Drop us an email or call if you want some more info.
