ok i'm trying to learn what not to let people use while on the boat i read some post about certain things staining the seats and what not is that the lotions that do it or the tanning accelerators that girls use?

I'd steer away from any spray on sunscreen.

Maybe you'll have better luck, but we used it early last summer and we had several stain spots forming on our seats. I think it's something to do with the aerosol. Searched the issue on wakeworld and the overwhelming consensus is that the spray on sunscreen was the devil for upholstery.

We were able to get the blemishes off, but once we stopped using it we had no more issues.

I had to replace some skins about five years ago because of the stains and I couldn't tell you what brands caused them. They appeared later in the day and my best guess it was excess lotion rather than the skin/lotion contact as I didn't see distinct leg markings but a few swirl marks. I ask people to allow a few minutes for the lotion to soak in before sitting on the seats. I haven't had a problem since.

No aerosol style allowed in or around the boat, then all other must dry before sitting down on the seats

that spray stuff is banned on my moomba regardless of when it is applied... see my previous post about its paint melting qualities....

We've never had any problems, but then we do keep our seats regualarly protected with 303 or Babes so maybe I've put enough on to keep this from happening? We have used the kids aerosole stuff and while we have had no issues, it just seems to be a PITA to use?

The aerosols in spray lotion will break down the UV inhibitors in the vinyl. In some cases they will stain permanantly as well. I never use them on mine either.

Good luck telling my wife no more spray sunscreen. That stuff is great. I hate putting on sunscreen but I never mind the spray stuff, especially the coconut smelling variety. I've never heard of it being an issue with vinyl so I will look over our seats close next time I'm out. Also, I live in Alberta so we don't need sunscreen very often anyways.

It's not just the vinyl. The health of the gelcoat might be an issue too. http://forums.sbo.sailboatowners.com/archive/index.php/t-79137.html

I haven't had a problem but I protect with Babes/303 about every 2 weeks.

People use what I have on the boat so heck no will a tanning lotion with dye in it be on my boat. We usually try to have the spray stuff put on standing on the rear plateform

at some point common sense would dictate some alternative...

Here's the alternative we all use in FL:

I also like how those shirts stay damp-with a little breeze it helps keep you cool on a hot day when out of the water

We got cooked over the memorial day weekend, even with the kids wearing rach gaurds. Might need to look into long sleeve versions!

Sun tan lotion as lube, no that's novel :D
