180 Degree Operating Temperature

My temperature gauge seems to be hanging out around 180 degrees on my 05 Outback (Indmar Assault 325 hp). Most of my other boats ran around 160. I'm thinking the previous owner (or his shop) may have inadvertently stuck a 180 degree thermostat in it. I'm fairly sure it should be a 160. Just thought I'd check in with the group and see where your engine temps are at.

Well I was going to go out today but not with these thunder storms so I will check tomorrow. But either 160 or 180 seems fine as you have to remember this is not a closed loop system like a car, you now have a gigantic cool water reservoir. I would only be worried if she started climbing above 200 and didn't stop because the termostat didn't open. But a 20F difference (and these gages are going to have some error on the order of +/- 5F at least) will not make a situation that one would have to worry about.

markcr - That's exactly where my temperature gauge sits. I have an '07 Outback w/ Indmar Assault 325 hp. Bought the boat new. Have never had an issue with the engine. - Deerfield

Thanks deerfield, that's the kind of verification I was looking for. Sounds like ~180 degrees is the normal operating temp.

I have an 07 XLV with the 340 and I am at 180

My 340 MPI engine is typically in the range of 160-170. The only time that I have noticed it sustaining 180 was when it turned out that the cap over the impeller was loose and leaking badly.

I think they are supposed to be @ 165... but mine runs in the 170s..PLUS, these gauges ARE NOT precise. Only worry is if it rises!!!
I ran my boat for first time sat and water was in 50s and temp stayed in low 170s.. Down south, in heat of summer with 90 deg water, it stayed just shy of 180..
Comparing to my 5.3l in my truck that runs around 220/230.. it's fine!! these run cooler cuz they don't need to run a heater.. (i think..)

Actually they run cooler because they run an open system and they don't have to worry about the EPA. On an auto you want the CATs as close as you can to the engine so that they get heated up as fast as possible. Engine manufacturers also have the engine temps up to help lite the cats off and to ensure a complete burn so the percentage of unburnt hydrocarbons is reduced. The boat manufacturers don't have to worry about this yet and I think Indmar is getting ready for something from California, you know the state that killed the 2 stroke dirt bike, the 2 stroke weedeater, etc.
And keep in mind 20degrees F on one of these engines is nothing!

just came from the dealership yesterday working on a buddies '94 boomerang. mechanic stated 140 if no shower/heater and 165 if you have them. that's on the pcm351. on the indmar 340hp ext/cat that mine has, he said 165 since I have the heater.

Up to 110 degrees air and it never passes 180, been that way since the day i bought it. Dealer said it's normal, and no the gauges are not 100% accurate.

Keep in mind that some people have raw water cooled and some have fresh water cooled. If you have raw water cooled and boat in 80 degree water, your temp is going to run a little higher than someone that boats in 70 degree water. Air temp is also going to play a factor. I would say anything in the 150-190 range would be normal operating temp, although at 190 I would be a little worried about the longevity of the motor. my .02

My '04 XLV climbs to 180 and stays there rock solid. I've wondered if that was normal but has never seemed to cause any problems. I've received varying feedback on 180 vs 160 from different dealers.

I had the same issue, per Indmar:

The engine has a 160 degree thermostat but operating at 180 is not unusual. The thermostat only ensures the engine runs at 160 minimum. It may run warmer than that depending on how the engine is being used and the temperature of the water it is being operated in.

180 since I bought my XLV in 05. Only lower when I start it, and it has never gone over 180.
