View Full Version : $28.50 Raw Water Strainer

So here it is, the $28.50 Hypro strainer from McMaster-Carr. It is identical to the $49.95 Sherwood unit from Skidim with the exception of the stainless collars around the inlet/outlet ports. I don't see that being a problem. It is 1 1/4" with a 20/20 mesh stainless screen. Grand total with two poly barbed/npt fitting was $39.13 shipped to Cali including tax.

I'll be putting this on in a few weeks and documenting the install. For those that might wonder why i got straight fittings? On the LSV the inlet hose to the Vdrive loops back to the through hull which leaves a nice long straight section of hose to splice into. No sense getting exotic with installing as i see it.

For scale purposes i place my keys next to the strainer to give an idea.

Razz, those are identical! I was looking at your photo of the un-branded Hi-pro filter, and it's identical to my Sherwood filter I got from Skidim for twice as much as you paid! I feel 'great' about having those stainless caps though, because, well, they aren't going to do anything but look fancy. I suppose they'd help if you put 150 ft-lbs on the plastic threads when you tightened the bards down... not sure why you'd crank them down so tight to need support, but whatever!

I'm looking forward to your install, since I'll be tackling that project in about a month.

Since the system is not under pressure there's no reason to crank them down, all you have to do is create a seal at the fitting. That's the reason i went with poly fitting, they're softer than pvc and will seal simply by hand tightening. And since there's no pressure and the barbs will pretty much seal in the hose you don't need to crank the hose clamps way down either.

ok this strainer is for all the water that comes into the boat?

the water strainer that came factory on mine is just for the ballast system?

Gus, this is for the raw water intake from the bottom of your hull to the Vdrive only. If you have a factory ballast system then you have a much smaller 3/4" version of this. You may or may not have this already. If in doubt open the Vdrive compartment and look back from the inlet hose to see if it's there, if not then this is a inexpensive solution to prevent problems.

Won't the strainer slow down water intake? I mean alot of us on here are getting rid of the ballast strainer for that same reason. But this is me probablly asking a stupid question without doing a little research first. I don't even know if you need a certain amout of water flow for the v drive, nor do I know if this would slow that intake down at all? So I guess instead of doing some research I'll just ask. LOL

Gotta Hand it to ya Razzman.........Your a ton of help to us on the forum. You make it so easy to do upgrades with your comprehensive lists and "deals" you seem to find. I for one want to express my thanks and appreciation. I don't happen to need one of these yet (as my boat already has one) but you've been a ton of help on other issues. Thanks Much :)

Stretch, no it doesn't slow it down perceptably as the intake/outlet/mesh size is engineered to accomodate the flow. Also remember that the intake flow itself is not a solid stream flow. Ever hooked up your boat to a Fake-a-Lake? If so you'll notice the water exiting the exhaust is pulsing in bursts as the impellor rotates and is not a solid stream either.

Btw these are stock on Supras if i remember and an option on Moombas.

Uh... not really sure how, but my strainer showed up at my door this morning. About 20 hours from when I placed my order. WOW! And this thing is big... I'm going to have to get creative with how I mount it since my ballast pumps are inevitably going to be in the way.

Can anyone confirm if these can be mounted sideways? Or must they be bowl down?

Razzman
04-09-2010, 11:26 PM
From what i can find they can be mounted at a slight angle according to Skidim, what that means is beyond me. Can you re-route the hose to move it around some?

Well if it's good enough for Sled... I'm going to pick up some other radiator hose though. The stock stuff wont get as far onto the barb fitting as I'd like. Other than that, I think this will work great.

Razz, thanks a TON!

Darn you Razz! I've been putting off buying this strainer for the last 3 years but finally ordered one about two weeks ago at the same time that I ordered the heater. Then a few days letter, you tell us about your find. I paid $52 for mine and it didn't even come with the chrome rings!

I bought 90 degree elbows for mine though (I see you went with straight thru fittings) and am going to install it like the factory does, per the pic below that Jesse posted in another thread. I think it will make it easier to access the bowl this way.

Thanks for posting that pic, Cab. It's got me wondering if mounting it that way has anything to do with it being above the draft level. If the bowl were to crack, or if you simply wanted to clean it out while on the water, I wonder if it's high enough to keep you from taking on water. My location I'm not so sure...

LOL! Sorry Al, I'll make it up to ya some how! :p

Btw, how exactly is that connected from the Vdrive to the bowl? I can't tell in the pic.

Razz,

It's connected to the same fitting as our boat except the fitting is pointed straight up instead of towards the front of the boat.

Brain,

Good observation, and one I had not thought of. I am not sure that the factory location puts it below the draft level. That would be a nice bonus if it did.

Yesterday i installed the $28.50 raw water strainer as Al had done it in the factory location. While prepping for it i remembered Al mentioning the barbed fittings would not go all the way into the hose due to the spiral wrapped wire in the hose.

Looking at it I noticed the factory hose EL on the Vdrive only has a larger rounded end to help secure the hose, no barbs. So i got to thinking, why not emulate that on the fittings and eliminate the issue. So i did, i cut off three barbs, rounded and smoothed and i was able to get the fittings all the way into the hose (not without WD-40 and muscle!) with room for clamps and it seems to have worked just fine.

I'm going with this McMaster-Carr item, there is at least two places for an install; in front of the tranny cooler and in front of the raw water pump. Probably a spot down at the hull as well, I'm traveling and can't look at my newly purchased '08 Boomer right now.

the only problem i see with that is it restricting the flow of water if junk starts building up on the screen.

Exactly the reason NOT to use that setup. If anything gets in that screen it will immediately diminish water flow. Too much blockage will overheat the engine and or cause a potential burst point somewhere.

I have an 06 OBV which is smaller and it didn't look like I could get the vertical mount from the howto to fit under the v-drive cover. There are a few ways I could get it to fit in there but I settled on this with only two elbows. The 3.25" or so section of tube I cut off was the only cut I had to make; the stock tube is now short enough that it can run to the strainer without any real issues. On the plus side I think I can also still make that stock tube connect to the v-drive if there were a reason to.

Haven't gotten it on the water to double check everything yet, but should hopefully be good to go.
