My oldest Grandson needs/wants a new vest this year. He's set his sights on the new 2010 O'Neill Gooru and i cannot find it anywhere but full retail. Anyone? So as not to start a great debate let me say yes i know it's not a uscg vest but a pullover comp vest and i'm fully aware of the pros and cons of each type.

Thanks guys, i've checked Boardersmall, Evo Gear, Wakeside, Buywake, Boardstop, etc. Those that do have it want $124.95 for it.

Ian, that's the '09 vest in the link and of course he doesn't like that design, go figure.

Here it is for $110. All though I am not sure what the shipping is. I am pretty sure it's a 2010...

A uscg vest has two main criteria, it must float you for 30 minutes, will keep you vertical in the water and it may roll you over onto your back if uncouncious.

Some enforcement departments will ticket you if you don't have enough uscg pfd's on your boat and they won't count non-uscg vests. To the best of my knowledge they cannot ticket you though for wearing them.

In NYS they will fine you 25 to 100 for riders wearing non approved vests. they made a law that between nov 1 to May 1 that all opeartors and passengers will be require to wear an approved PFD in all boat 21 ft or less regardlessof age ( most likely to avoid shock drowning in cold water)

yeah i guess i need to check the laws and see what it states in ohio for sure. but i usually see in pics the pros using pfd's so thin and small there is no way they are uscg approved and i wondered how they got away with it just assumed anyone's vest had to be but certain states have certain laws and some are more strick then others ?

The laws don't apply in tournaments btw. Otherwise your at the mercy of local water cops, at least around here. On our lakes if your wearing a vest, don't draw undue attention warrenting a stop then they leave you alone.

after our wonderful new National Health Care plan gets shoved down our collective throats (or up our collective rears), I wonder if the new PFD requirements will result in all of us having to wear something like this

I sense a bit of dissatisfaction or perhaps even distrust of our duly elected representatives. May I suggest a cup of TEA to calm you down.

If you want to get technical, I bet just about every state has a requirement that you have to have at least one CG approved PFD for every person on board plus a throwable. In most states children under 16 or so have to be actually wearing them. And, anyone being towed has to wear one too. But, enforcement is very selective. You really won't be in much trouble until something bad happens. Then the news anchor will say that the injured boarder "was not wearing a CG approved flotation device as required by law" and the driver or owner "was cited for numerous violations".

Yea here in Cali it's uscg vest on at all times for 12 and under. You WILL get a ticket for that if caught and we enforce that religously. We do also have approved vests for all onboard as well as the mandantory throwable. At 15 now we let him make the decision on the vest he wears ... within reason. Some non-uscg vests just don't cut it but others work very well.
