Nikon camera users help

I have a d50(my wife has the d50) and was looking into the 300mm lenses. Is the VR worth the extra $$ looks like i can get an AF for $150 and the new version is almost $600.00 we have the 18 to 55mm plus the 55 to 200mm without the VR. anyhelp would be appreciated. Shhhhh its for her Bday...;)

I don't think the D50 has the VR option so it would be a waste of money. D40's don't just the D60 that Z and I and a few others have. But look into it. Does your current lense have a VR setting?

Yeah I think you are better off with the regular 70-300 not the one with the VR option.

I shoot with a Canon XTi, and my dad has a Nikon D70. Most of the action shots on here and my Facebook are actually from his D70.

What the difference between the imported lens and the USA lens. both look the same and same price , must be a warranty issue can anyone confirm.

i would need to buy a new camera to utilize VR technology, now that would not save me boat toys

Ed, VR = vibration reduction on nikon, Canon has IS = image stabilization.

I did the dark room thing once.:(

Now its so easy to uplaod pictures in any sizes to sams club , shutterfly etc and they will print it for you. It does just fine and really in expensive. still have a local shop that will process negatives if needed, though;)

I have D60 and have VR lenses... I can tell a difference on wake shots with VR compared the previous non VR i Had. Do you REALLY need a 300m?
I have tried some.. useless off the tripod beyond 200.. I have been shooting wake shots on my 18-55 a lot actually..

this will be the third lens to the portfolio of lenses. 18-55 55-200 and now a 70-300. so hopefully it should fill the void. closeups for the kids boarding and skiing are priceless at that range.

I had a 70-300 when I first got D60 Found I rarely used past 200
I got the Nikon 55-200 VR.. Great lens..

Look at the Tamron's as well.. I've had a few of them..

Brad, which 55-200 do you have. there is one that is affordable but slow, and one that is expensive but supposed to be awsum.

Z has been using the 70-300 with real good results. I find my 18-55 is not enough for good action shots on the lake, and is too slow as well.

As far as I know only Nikon or Nikor lenses have the VR technology. It is not available in aftermarket lenses.

Do you really need a 300?
Well with my old Nikon N6006 we were trying to capture pictures of Deer, birds and other animals (yeah and girls on the beach) and you can sneak up on them much easier with a longer range lens (ok what this means is you don't have to get so close to take the shot and hence you don't scare them away). So with us it did not stop at a 70-300 it went so far as I have a 600mm mirror lens. And because it is totally a manual lens I am pretty sure that I can get it to work on the new D60 too. But keep in mind you really have to have a tripod for this puppy.
The point is yes you always can use a longer range lens and the shots of the kids on the skis from the 300 are awesome. However, the problem becomes can you justify the cost for it! Only you can answer that one.

I shoot with a Cannon at the moment, having made the switch from Nikon

Both are great companies but I found the Cannon more user friendly in full control modes.

As for the lense question, I'd second Ed's suggestion on the Sigma lenses. They have been winning quite a few serious photographers over. I shoot mostly with Primes and just picked up a 50mm 1.2 lense that is amazing quality. Damn thing can just about shoot in darkness with no flash.

I know sigma is making lenses for both backs. Worth a look.

yeah of all the lens we have for both cameras we have 3 different brands. Nikon, Sigma and another one (starts with a T? and I am not going to dig it out right now) and they have all been great. but with the Ritz and Wolf camera stores gone and only walmart and bestbuys left you don't have the expertise and the selection as easily available as you once did so currently all new lens for the new camera are Nikon (Best Buy).

You asked about which lens I have.. It is the $200 55-200 VR NOT the $1500 model (70-200.. My Bro in law has one..)
One tip I was given for Wake Photos from some seasoned photogs was to Focus on a rider at their given rope length.. Turn off AF and shoot. If you don't move lens much, you should be able to maintain focus. That keeps the AF sensors from slowing down photos. WOrks good for me. I do find that if I depend on AF for action shots, it lags.
One issue with D40/D60 is they use focus motor in lens, not camera..

Other option is set the focus mode (cant remember the setting) but such that you can focus before action shot, hold shutter halfway and release when ready.

Sigma still makes a good lens. I considered when I got this lens. They make a NICE 18-200MM with Stabilzation for about $400.. That will cover JUST about all you need!
