View Full Version : Upgrading trailer Rims

Has anyone here upgraded their trailer rims? I kind of like the look of the optional Supra rims. I think they are 15 or 16 inch? The upgrade is purly on looks... I was also thinking of getting the stainless fenders. I convinced myself, instead of buying a new boat this year, I would find ways to dress mine up a bit - for a change:D

Anyone have photos showing off their Blinged out Trailer?

I changed out my stock chrome rims for some aluminum 5 star rims. I sometimes operate in brackish water and knew that the chrome ones would rust quickly.
I purchased mine from a local trailer shop. Used the stock tires on the new wheels, which was cheaper and sold the 2 chrome wheels. They were about $80 each installed.

Those look very similar to the aluminum rims I already have. Sounds like a great price too. I am thinking of heading over to a tire place down the street that carry all sorts of rims to see what they have. I am hoping that trailer rims are cheaper than car rims.

The bling trailer wheels will actually be car/truck wheels that have the backspacing and offset to work with the trailer and fender. The trailer fenders can be an issue as well.

Check out my profile. Lots of picks there. I love my wheels they have lots to pick from and they are already the right backspacing, diameter, and lug pattern. The best part is I didn't have to buy new tires.
Fman also bought a set for his supra. I'm sure he will chime I too. I think I paid $450 shipped for four with center caps and Chrome valve stems.
As far as the fenders, most trailer shops will have them I stock. Check shadowtrailers.com they have all kinds of trailer accessories. They are the same people as trailer-wheels.com they are very helpful and will answer any questions you have.
Hope this helps.

Newty, I looked at your pics and noticed your swim platform. Is it from a Supra?

No I bought the supra grab rail from my dealer and installed it on my deck.
BTW they are the same as the supra so they fit.

I upgraded from 14" to 18" wheels. FYI, the wheels would not fit the fenders so I had to get new wider fenders from boatmate.

Offset is the key if trying to find truck wheels that fit. To save headaches and making a bad purchase, I would go with something offered for Supra's and new fenders. Might not be the cheapest tho.

Just got back from a few tire places here in town. When I asked for 18" trailering tires, they looked at me as if I had horns growing out of my head. The only tires they could find were 255 45 R18 heavy load rating high performance. However they cautioned me that premature tire failiure is possible as the tires were not designed for the side to side stress common with tandem axle trailers. What is everyone using? Have anyone heard of tire failiure using 18" wheels?

Might be best to get these through boatmate or alike.

Unfortunately they are right, load rate C, D in an 18" tire don't exist and if they did they'd proabably be an "LT" or light truck tire. What all of these people are doing is using high performance tires on the trailers. They have the weight capacity to safely carry the load but do not have the heavy duty sidewalls. 18" trailer wheels don't exist either, they are just 18" car wheels put on trailers. Having been in the tire biz for 15 years of my youth and knowing what i know about tires & wheels, you won't see me doing it on my trailer that's for sure.

I am looking at 17" rims. What off set do you need to use so you don't have to add the bigger fenders?

I have no clue on the offset, alot will depend on the tire as well.

They need to be a zero off-set. I agree with Razz I was strongly cautioned against larger wheels and tires by more than on tire/wheel shop because of load rating issues.
I mulled over finding 17-18" wheels for a long time and was really worried about the look when I ordered my 14"s but I'm really happy with the look. The other thing to consider is curb rash. With the 14"s there is a lot more rubber and you are less likely to damage the rims. No matter how you drive, at some point you will end up in a pickle and scrape the ish them.
I have yet to find someone with 17's or bigger on a trailer w/o curb rash.
Again you don't have to buy tires either.

That's the way Newty and your right, you WILL hit something sooner or later. The thing about that is the load range D tires have real beefy sidewalls that will endure those hits. The designer tires don't and won't.

The other thing that bothers me is that very few wheels are actually forged, most are cast. Cast wheels will break under undue pressure and can actually bust the outer bead right off the wheel. Some cast wheels can also be porous and leak as well and can be a real biatch to balance some times.

I'm not saying don't do it, it's everybodies choice but be prepared is all.

just got word back from Trailermate and in order to put the Supra Optional 18" wheels and fenders on, major modifications would have to be done, he advised that the costs could be as much as 1/2 the cost of the trailer.

So I decided that I am better to find cool 14" chrome whels or see if I could go with 15". Another call has been placed to confirm how large I can go and to maiek sure the Stailess fenders will fit. I had to give them the s/n of my trailer.

Newty... love your set up.. Its amazing the difference new wheels make, even though their 14", they appear to look much larger. Besides, I am thinking it would be much cheaper to get new 14" shiney wheels and use the existing tires.

I purchased these for my Supra, I believe it was around $450 shipped to my hose then I had to pay to have the mounted and balanced. They are not as nice as the 18" gravity games wheels/fenders, but a nice little upgrade to the stock 14" steel wheels. I also sold my old wheels for $100 on craigslist.

These wheels are the "Dark Force", here is the store I purchased them from:

Ok... now i am confused:confused: Just got off the phone with my local Moomba dealer and they said they talked with the parts guy from Boat Mate and he was told that there is NOTHING that can be upgraded without "major" modifications. They have my trailer s/n, so they know exactly what I have.

I thought for sure that I could easily swap out the fenders to stainless. and put on the optional 14" or 15" chrome "spinner type" wheels on. What gives? Do they just not want my business?

My wheels I put on required "NO" modifications at all, it was a simple bolt-on installation. Not sure if the Moomba trailers are different from Supra. I think the only difference would be that Supra has 4 wheel disc brakes, but I dont think this would cause any problems with wheel size.

Razzman
03-08-2010, 06:25 PM
If your staying within the parameters (14" wheel to 14" wheel) then it's no problem. The problems arise when you attempt to put larger wheels on and don't keep the tire height within the specs so you don't have interence.

Example, your boat tires should be 215/75R14 goodyear marathons, place a 15" wheel on there and you have to put a smaller or larger size to maintain the same height so you don't hit the fender since Goodyear only makes 205/75R15 & 225/75R15. To get it right you need to go with 18" tires & wheels and a 60 series tires to maintain height but now the tire and wheel is wider and in some cases a wider fender is needed so you don't hit the tire in this case.

Btw, you won't gain anything at all by going with 15" wheels, they're all but indistinguisable from 14". You can go with 14" custom wheels, just swap your wheels for something you like. You only need to make sure the offset matches what you have so you don't hit the inside of the frame, suspension or fender.

Im planning on doing the new fenders next year, i was told by AWS it requires major changes to do this. Now my major changes and there major changes may be different. When i tell them all the things ive done to my boat they says wow thats some major chit. I think its all little chit.

Take the wheels off. Look around if you can unbolt the fender then its as simple as that as long as the length between the front step and rear steps are the same.

I dont see where disk brakes matter if you go with a larger wheel, on when you go smaller.

My LSV has 4 wheel Disks breaks.

I do believe for the most part double axle trailers all use one of three lengths 66", 72" & 102" in 7.5", 9" or 10" widths, it's an industry standard.

Brakes won't matter because you couldn't go smaller if you wanted to.

Mike you have four wheel disc because it's an Oregon law, brakes on all axles.

mmandley

WOW didnt know it was OR law. So your saying all the Moomba double axle trailers dont have disk brakes?

Razzman
03-08-2010, 11:57 PM
Exactly, in Cali they come on the leading axle only. In many states, trailers with a GVWR of 1,500 pounds or more are required to have brakes on all wheels. Wish they did have 'em though. Although it would be simple enough to add them on as the flanges are already there.

So I have been looking at 14" wheels and found one style that I like. However with that said, If I can increase the size to 15" (225 75R15) I have a few more choices. So my question would I be able to go up one size without any problems - say with the fender? The diameter is 1/2" larger and approx 1" wider. I am hoping there is plenty of room for this on my stock 2009 LSV T/A trailer.

No guarentees and unless somebody here has done it then nobody will have a definate answer. I would suggest you find a tire store, auto wreckers, etc. that might have a tire/wheel combo laying around and try it. The 5 lug wheel is the same as the old ford auto pattern so there are tons of them out there. The problem is that it might be that 1/2" is all it needs to hit on full compression but you won't know until you try. Or maybe take it to a trailer shop and see what they say.

Heres another place with some good prices.

If it is only 1/2" taller that is only 1/4" differance on each side, shouldnt have any problems there. If any problems it would be the width. If you want to run a 15" rim why not just run the same size tire you have now in a 15?

badasshybrid
03-11-2010, 10:35 PM
A 205/75R15 is about 1" shorter that the 225.

bjames
03-12-2010, 12:20 PM
205 75R14 = 25.1" OD
225 75R15 = 26.1" OD

This is from memory, but I do recall from the tire chart that going up to the 15" is exactly 1" larger in OD (1/2" on either side). The tread width is 20mm (just under an inch wider. So perhaps a proper offset will prevent the tire from getting close to the inside of the tapered fender. I confirmed whats on my trailer right now.. this may be usefull to others who are wondering what trailer tire comes standard with an 2009 LSV with aluminum rims.

Trailer America
ST Radial
ST205 75 R14

From Goodyear Marathon:

Tire Size Sidewall Rim Width O.D. Section Width Max. Load

ST205/75R14 BSL 5.0- 6.5 26.1 7.9 1,760
ST205/75R15 BSL 5.0- 6.5 27.1 7.9 1,820
ST225/75R15 BSL 6.0- 7.0 28.3 8.7 2,150

What I was saying is if you are running a 205 75 14 and wanted to run a 15" rim just step up to a 205 75 15. It would be the same tire just 1" taller. If you have enough clearance to run 1" taller you would be fine. Get the same size rim you have now with the same offset only in a 15" series. And run the 205 75 15.

If you go to a 225 75 15 the tire will be taller and wider. Unless you want to run a 225 75 15 then find a tire shop that will tell you for sure if it would fit.

If you wanted to run 18" rims a 225 45 18 would be the same as the 205 75 14 only it would be 1" wider.

newty
03-14-2010, 08:55 AM
The problem with most 17" and 18" rims is, you can't get them in 6" or 6.5" widths, or in the correct off set. so now your stretching out the shoulder of the tire. So even though in theory it should be the same overall size the wider rim make the tire too wide to fit up under the fender.

Looking closely at the 17" offering from Trailer Wheels, I figured out that if I install the 17" Ninja rims along with the recommended 225 55R17 ST tire, that the tire wil only be 5/8" wider on each side and 1/2" taller on each side. Looking at the clearance under the tapered fenders, it seems like it might fit.

http://www.trailer-wheels.com/17-inch-Polished-Aluminum-Ninja-Star-Trailer-Wheel-_p_720.html

I checked the clearence on the Supra with 18" wheels, the space between the inside tire wall and fender skirt is pretty tight, I cant even get my fingers behind, however on my boat it seems that I have at least twice the space.

The only question I have is that based on the info on the website, the rim is 8.5" wide, but the 225 wide tire fits rim sizes 6 - 8". According to other tire size calculators, a 8.5" rim width needs a min. 235 wide tire. Not sure if there is a typo somewhere or they are mating the wrong tire with this rim .?.

newty
03-18-2010, 12:51 PM
Like I said be careful with wheel width. That wheel is 2.5" wider than the 14's and 15's.

bjames
03-18-2010, 06:11 PM
Thats correct, but the 225 tire width is only 3/8" wider on each side weather it sits on a 6" or 8" wide rim or wether its a 14 or 17" wheel. It just means that there is less bulge on the lower profile 225 tire.

I am still not sure what I will go with, I might just get the Chrome Twisted 14" rim to be a direct replacement to what I have.

Anyone got photos of 14" Chrome twisted star wheels?

I like the 17" Ninja star rims and tires also. But lets break this down. Theese numbers are me just spit balling.

Ninja Star rims $140 each x 5 (you want a spare right?) $700
Tires for the Ninja start $130 each x 5 (spare tire) $650
New fenders (bare steel+paint) $100 each plus we'll say $200 to paint $400
OR stainless steel fenders $250 each $500

Grand Total $1,750-$1,800.00

So let's all ponder on this for a moment. Do we want to drop almost $2,000.00on the boat trailer? Or $2,000.00 on the boat? Like lets say $2,000.00 toward a wrap, or stereo, or ballast or all kinds of numerous upgrades.

Don't get me wrong I love the look of the 17" and 18" rims. And I also ponder getting them. i am just putting the cost into prospective.

Well each of you are entitled to you opinions on what you would spend a certain amount of money on, lets face it, there are many other people that think were are all crazy to spend what we spent on our boats in the first place:p Also, when upgrading, I tend to look at the whole package not just the boat, but thats just me:D

Anyways, after lots of reasearch on this matter, I decided to stay with the same wheel size and get the "Twisted Star" chrome wheels that used to be offered on the Supra Gravity Games a few years ago. The total cost ended up being hundreds of dollars instead of thousands if I would have went with 16" or larger. Also I thought that there were too many potential risks involved by going with out of spec rims/tires. So I thought I would keep it simple.:) My Stainless fenders should be arriving anyday:-D Cant wait to get those installed.
