View Full Version : Help: Which one? New 2008 obv or xlv

found a obv for 33.5K and a xlv for $40K. Both new. Which one? xlv has more options, but the price of the obv seems really good. Any thoughts? Plus, what is the difference between a gravity 1 ball. system and a gravity 3? The obv has the g1 and the xlv has the g3... Which system is better and why? Is there a difference in the fill times as well? Also, what is the purpose of the water strainer? I will probably have some more questions, as I am researching like mad and want to be well informed before dropping that kind of $$ on a boat.

Thanks in advance....

Hey Trevor- welcome to the forum. Both are great boats- sounds like a good price for each. I picked up a 2008 OBV last summer and love it. Part of the reason I went with the OBV is because I like to ski and the lighter and shallower OBV is a great crossover boat. Note that 2008 was the last year before the OBV went to a shorter, deeper, and heavier hull.

If you looked at them both up close I'm sure you noticed the size difference. Most here will tell you to go with the G 3 ballast. When I got my boat in July last year I didn't think I needed G3 ballast but by August I was glad I had it. There's not really a difference in fill time between them because the G1 uses 1 pump to fill a 400# bag in the ski locker compartment and the G3 uses 3 pumps- one to fill each 400# bag in the ski locker and both rear compartments. The G3 give you a nicer wake and also more control over the shape.

Give us some info about your boating experience and your favorite boating activities and I'm sure you get lots of responses!

I am fairly new to the forum and not the best resource here, but I can give you some of my thoughts.

OBV is just under 21 ft. The seats are a little lower than the XLV, which may or may not be an issue for you. The OBV puts out a pretty nice ski wake, especially with the wakeplate. OBV can still put out a nice wakeboard wake, but GIII and wakeplate are a must for that. What will you be using the boat for?

XLV is 23ft long. Bigger boat all together, wider and deeper. More of a wake boat, still can ski with of course, but most dedicated slalom ski boats are 20 ft or under. Since it's bigger, more people fit and bigger storage compartments. Is the a bigger boat worth the extra money to you? It costs more, but you get more.

GI is one 400 lb center ballast bag. Bag is located in the ski locker. GIII introduces two 400 lb rear locker bags along with the ski locker bag(1,200 lbs of ballast), hence GIII for three bags. Fill times, hmmm this could open a REALLY big can of worms. I will say that GI will fill faster than GIII since you are only filling one bag. GIII a must if you want to do some wakesurfing.

Water strainer is just a filter for the ballast system. It keeps debris from clogging the sprinkler valves, the valves that open to allow the bags to be filled separately. Both GI and GIII use one main water pump and the sprinkler valve/s are there to stop/allow water flow when you turn the switch on to fill a bag/s.

Hope that helps. Either way, both are solid boats that I am sure you would be happy with.

I say XLV 23' big boy boat with a big boy wake! You won't be dissapointed! If it were me and I got the 21 with the G1 ballast and passed up the 23' with G3 ballast the XLV would always be in the back of my head. Honestly if you get OBV your gonna wanna upgrade to the G3 so I wouldb do it right the first time. Go with the biggest and best wake producing boat Moomba makes! You won't be sorry! But then again I have an XLV and when it's on the water by 21' boats the size dif is just silly. That's my 2cent's either way though both are a good buy.

XLV, no doubt. Try and find an owner who doesn't agree :)

XLV period. Space, ballast... I could go on and on but you'll never look back if you have an XLV.

Also, to be perfectly honest, I have an OBV because of cost. I would take a XLV in a heartbeat, but it is not in my budget YET :). I tell myself that I have an OBV because I like to both ski and wakeboard, which is true. However, I could ski behind a XLV just the same. I'm a long cry from a professional course slalom skier.

Just my 2 cents. Get the XLV if you can, and yes you will want GIII!

I will be getting the specs on each boat next week to look at. I will post again once I have them with more questions (ie: difference between this and that etc...) Thank you in advance... Either way I think we will be happy... Just don't want to pass up a really good deal on a XLV (if its a smoken deal). This is a NEW boat that never sold due to recession etc... Going into the 2010 boating year, the dealer wants to blow it out... I assume the $40K is a really good price for it (as is the $33.5K for the OBV). I will more once the specs come in to know for sure... I will post for more info shortly.

Thanks again!

That's a great deal on the XLV. I paid 41k for my new '08 and it only had GG1 but got the dealer help out on the GG3. The boat is huge and I love mine. In rough waters the extra boat is nice and you don't feel crowded even with 8-9 people.

One thing to keep in mind, the '08 Ballast fill system is terribly designed, they used Sprinkler valves that should have never been put in a wakeboard boat. The '09 models have a much improved JABSCO pump system that will fill and drain much more efficiently.

Many Supra and Moomba owners with '08 and older boats have had a lot of porblems with the ballast fill systems not working properly and are extremely slow.

Just something to keep in mind... I had to replace my entire fill system on my '08 Supra because of excessive problems with the sprinkler valves. Its not a huge expense, but definitely something you will have to consider.

You never said what year the boats are. Are they both the same year? The XLV is just simply huge next to an older (08) OBV. I think the 40 on the XLV sounds like a better deal, but only if it is the boat you want, need, or can afford.

dont forget to factor in where the boat will sit when not being used-- a xlv wont fit a standard garage

Just my 2 cents...I love the XLV..would never go any smaller. Mainly wakeboard, and surf, and great for when you need the extra room. If you are a hardcore skier, then def go with a smaller boat, but if not, for the extra money and room, you will not be disappointed with the XLV. What ever you choose, make sure to post some pic's of your new purchase. Good Luck!!

We have a 1980 Sunrunner now with an I/O... The wake is huge! and we are still ok to ski behind it... Anything has to be better than it... Even if just a little, we will surf/wakeboard moreso than ski...

They are both NEW 2008... Never registered before and a dealer blow out (so they say).... We cna afford both, but the XLV is stretching the budget to a little more than our original max we wanted to pay.... I just dont want to be looking back and saying, "for an extra $4k I should have".... for the amount of time and years we will have the boat, I think its worth it, but will have to check the specs tomorrow... I will post when I get the email from the dealer.

If your willing to go as high as 40K, before you make any firm decisions, take a good look at the 2009/2010 Outback V

Is the 2009 &/o 2010 OB-V better than an 2008 XLV? Both are new boats.... what is the difference between the two that you feel is worth looking at??

Thanks

The 09 / 10 OBV was a completely redesigned OBV. The 08 version is the old hull and was more like the DD Outback but with a V Drive, while the new OBV has a very specific hull design for Wake surfing/boarding. The new hull OBV would be smaller than the 08 you are looking at. The XLV is the Mac Daddy of Moombas and is way bigger, by almost 5 ft in length.

Personally I can't own a V Drive due to limitations on my lake frontage, but if I could, for that money I'd go XLV.

Congrats on carefully considering your options.

You will never want less ballast than your boat can carry. Get the G3, and you'll be able to drop in bigger bags anytime, without changing the plumbing.

The biggest questions that you'll need to answer are not about the boats' options, but about yourself and what you want to do on the water over the next few years. If you want to specialise in wakeboarding and want a bigger wake, or want to entertain a bigger crowd (routinely more than 6-7 people) in comfort, or bring a lot of gear... the XLV is the better choice. In fact, many a boat owner suffers from "two-foot-itis" -- wishing he had a somewhat bigger boat. If you think that you'll suffer from this in the next 5-8 years, you might as well save yourself the cost of one boat purchase and go straight to the one that provides "doubt removal".

You might have specific needs that the OBV serves better. If you want to store your boat in a conventional garage, tow it with a vehicle that cannot confidently handle 5000 lbs plus people and gear, push it by hand around a storage area, or create a narrower wake for beginners (especially below 20 MPH), the OBV (or LSV) could mean that less is better.

If making this choice is your most difficult task this year, you can consider it to be a good year!

Well said Ian.

I've never heard it put as "2 foot- itus" but when I purchased my XLV in 08, I thought "I don't want to be wondering what it's like to have the biggest wake in all the Moomba lina and a wake that is pro level, when from the beginning it was only a few thousand more then a OBV or LSV. Now I am soooo very glad I did. The room is great for families (we invite another family and its quickly at 9 people or more and it's no problem) , or when it only a few guys, we have all have room to stretch out. I'm up in Canada where it's cold (duh) so we often leave the cover over the bow and with the heater on, it gets pretty toasty in there and the kids love to go up there and play. It also then keep all the wind out of the boat.

Oh ya, I fish a lot and its great to have all that room when you have 4 or 5 people fishing.

Didn't the XLV get a minor hull revision in the last year or two?

Really good points everyone... Thank you for the information... In considering both boats, for the price, I think we are leaning towards the XLV. I recd the specs today and the bigger boat just seems to more boat for the price.... Eitherway we cannot go wrong based on what you have all stated. Thank you !!

XLV all the way!!! You can always upgrade the ballast capacity if you want. Besides, you will enjoy the handy-dandy beer cooler within arms reach of the Captain's Chair!

Plus the weight difference isn't even that big. I think the new Outback V is 3200lbs and the XLV is 3600lbs.

Sorry for no picks yet.... too busy riding :-D The boat is nice.... Thinking about upgrading the ballast already! I was thinking the 750lbs in each rear locker & then a couple of 155lbs for up front.... Mainly for surfing but not sure yet... We are going to play for a while first and then after we have a good feel for the boat, make a decision....

The boat is nice... We are very happy with the XLV... Wake is very skiable (compared to our old boat) and a great crossover boat.

I will try to post some pictures soon... (think all blue with white bottom & white interior with blue stripes inside. Basic and clean, but we like it (plus it was the only choice for the price :) )
